Flowers, chocolates, jewelry and romance...that's what modern day Valentines' Day is all about. But behind it all is an ancient Roman story of martyrdom and sainthood and named after a priest who died sometime around 270 CE. But let's not dwell on the dark ancient history.
Sometime in the 1500s, formal messages began to appear, followed by commercially printed cards in the 1700s. Frequently, these cards depicted Cupid who is the Roman god of love and hearts, which are the traditional seat of emotion. Oh! And because it was thought that mid-February was avian mating season, birds--such as doves--also became a symbol of the holiday.
As a single person, I will be buying my own flowers, and I've already treated myself to a bag of candy. I think I will even treat myself to a nice steak dinner on Friday night along with a bottle of my favorite champagne. Not to say I haven't had my share of not so single Valentines' Day celebrations with nice dinners and gifts. But I've also had some shitty dinners and gifts. We won't talk about the time someone took me to a buffet restaurant...but I still showed my appreciation for the meal regardless of the less than romantic setting. Regardless of your relationship status, I truly hope each and every one of you either get taken out for a nice dinner or take care of showing yourself some love.
