Today is the traditional Celtic observation of the beginning of summer. May 1st. May Day. Smack dab between the spring equinox and the summer solstice. It represents a time of heightened fertility and a time to honor the renewal of the earth. Perhaps it should even be thought of as the beginning of the year.

The Celts celebrated with bonfires and feasts and decorating their homes with yellow flowers. Rituals were performed to protect the livestock and encourage growth of the crops which are beginning to sprout in the fields. Household fires were doused so that they could be rekindled from the flames of the Beltane bonfires. It is also believed that Beltane dew had the effect of bringing youthfulness.

In essence, Beltane is a time for renewal. To set intentions. To think about growth and new beginnings. To shed the coatings of the long winter months for the freedom of walking in the sunshine and breathing in fresh air.

So, take a walk. Meditate in the sunshine. Feel the blessings that come with the renewal around you. Have a blessed Beltane.
